PUERTO NUEVO RIDE DETAILS
READ THIS CAREFULLY
We will be traveling to Puerto Nuevo – the legendary lobster village. After the San Diego / San Ysidro border crossing, we will hug the coastline of Tijuana and Rosarito for a 45 minutes drive south on a modern toll road. The drive along the coast is very different and a stimulating experience! Once we enter the arches of the village, we will find 30+ Langostino houses, Mexican art, crafts, furniture, glass, pottery, and clothing. There is a pharmacy for those who want to pick up meds to take to the US.
The Baja Langostino is a “squat lobster” or tuna crab. They are not true lobsters but look and taste like them with sweet and delicate meat. Pleuroncodes planipes for the nerds.
THIS IS AN INTERNATIONAL TRIP. YOU MUST HAVE A PASSPORT.
FOR SAFE ENTRY AND RETURN FROM MEXICO YOU WILL NEED:
1) Current Driver’s License with M1 endorsement
2) Passport or passport card
3) Current motorcycle registration
4) Proof of current US insurance
5) Motorcycle Insurance for Mexico. Have paperwork with you. (See below)
6) Color copy of your Certificate of Title (Deed, aka pink slip)
6a) IF your motorcycle is financed check with your financing company regarding travel to Mexico.
6b) If you really can’t find your pink slip this is the only optional paperwork, but needed if there is an accident in Mexico.
7) At least 5 $1 bills AND 5 quarters for the Mexican toll road. If you use a large bill, you will receive your change in pesos.
8) Bring exact change for supervised parking $5 and lunch $25.
Money summary: 5 $1’s with 5 quarters, 2 $5 bills, one $20. Small bills for trinkets, clothing, blankets, etc.
I recommend you carry a paper color copy of 1-6: driver’s license, passport, registration, US motorcycle insurance, Mexico insurance and Certificate of Title (Deed, aka pink slip)
For the border crossings, NO guns, NO knives, pepper spray, MJ products including vape pens, opiates, amphetamines, or insecticides.
Meds must be in original prescription bottle.
You may return with $800 of purchased merchandise. You may want to purchase a bottle of pitorro a homemade unrefined rum-like spirit. You may return with a 3 month supply of prescription meds as long as they are not Schedule II meds in the US. No narcotics, stimulants, but antibiotics, antihypertensives, etc are OK.
You will NOT need the FMM (Forma Migratoria Multiple) or Mexico Tourist Card, needed for business, short term stays, and mainland stays.
You will NOT need a Temporary Import Permit because we will not be on the Mexico mainland.
You will NOT need pesos unless you intend to buy trinkets, and even then dollars are customary.
MEXICO INSURANCE
Mexico insurance for your bike for the day IS REQUIRED to get into Mexico. Because we are a group we will very likely be pulled over for inspection. No prob with proper paperwork.
I strongly recommend AAA if you have it or Baja Bound for the Baja Motorcycle Insurance. www.bajabound.com
Should be less than $40 for the day. You can enter a low value for your bike and get it for $20.
YOU MUST HAVE THIS INSURANCE.
TOLL ROAD 73
We will be taking Toll Road 73. There are no toll booths. If you have FasTrak, that account will be billed automatically. Otherwise, you can pay online at The Toll Roads or on The Toll Roads free app or a bill will be sent to your motorcycle registration address. If you have FasTrack, register your bike to your account and bring your transponder.
SAN YSIDRO ENTRANCE AND RIDE TO PUERTO NUEVO AND BACK
We will stop in San Ysidro before crossing. If you do not want to incur International Roaming Charges, you will want to turn your phone’s data roaming off. Please know how to do this in advance.
We will hug the right-hand side of the multi-lane entry system in order to get into an expedited motorcycle lane. We WILL lane split safely. There will be very large speed bumps and bollards, carry a bit of speed over these.
Once we cross into Baja, there is a great deal of construction on a whole new entry and exit to the San Ysidro crossing. We may have some changes in route to accommodate the construction. I will take it slow, so everyone can take in the views.
There will be 4 toll plazas (2 on the way down, same two on the way back), which take MX 42 or US$1.25. You should have exact change. Bring 4 quarters and 4 singles.
KEEP THE TOLL RECEIPTS. Keep the receipt for the toll, it is automatic insurance coverage in case the toll road is the source of an accident or problem.
Once each of us is through the toll booth, we will stop at the right-hand side to regroup and continue. If you do not have exact change, they will give you change in pesos and it will hold up the group.
Once in Puerto Nuevo, I have arranged a supervised parking area for us all, and it will be $5 per person.
Lunch will be piles of Langostino, beans, rice, vegetables, and one weak margarita included for $25 cash only.
After lunch, we will walk around the town a bit with time to purchase things, nip into stores, and chat with the colorful locals. There is a pharmacy to pick up prescription meds without prescriptions if you wish, no more than 90 day supply, no Schedule II drugs.
When we leave, we will have to make a U-turn where you will have 2 lanes of room. We will take a local road for 30-45 min just to see the happenings. Then we will re-join MXD1.
On return to the US at the San Ysidro crossing, we will be using the regular car crossing, NOT Fast Pass, Ready Lane, SENTRI, or Global Entry. The line backs up several miles into Baja and for cars it takes a few hours to get through the border. We will take perhaps 45 min. Lane splitting is legal in Tijuana and expected at the entry lanes. Sometimes, they have a dedicated motorcycle lane once you get close to the border that takes you right up front to the international boundary. We will see.
This part is crazy fun and unlike anything you will find in the US. Between the lanes of cars, there are countless carts vending clothing, blankets, homemade food, toys, flowers, etc. WE WILL BE LANE SPLITTING THROUGH THIS AREA TO GET TO THE FRONT. I will lead and “part the waters” for the group. Stay together and don’t stop to buy things during this part of the trip.
